Panel endorses 2 I-55 interchanges
Will County is expected to join several municipalities along Interstate Highway 55 in seeking construction of two interchanges to alleviate traffic congestion in fast-growing areas.
The County Board’s Public Works and Transportation Committee voted unanimously last week to seek board approval for a resolution supporting interchanges at Illinois Highway 126 near Plainfield and at Airport Road near Romeoville. The item could be added to the board’s agenda as early as Thursday, officials said.
The committee adopted the motion after leaders from Bolingbrook, Plainfield and Romeoville explained why they favor new interchanges along the 6-mile stretch from about Weber Road to U.S. Highway 30.
County Executive Larry Walsh recently told Tim Martin, secretary of the Illinois Department of Transportation, that widening I-55 from Weber Road to Interstate Highway 80 in Joliet is among his top priorities.
Committee chairman Cory Singer (R-Frankfort) said the improvements are “imperative because of the county’s growth.”
