Herta Newton, nee Landauer, age 92, of Evanston, passed away peacefully February 10, at Mather Pavillion in Evanston, beloved wife of the late Ernest; loving mother of James (Raija) Newton of London, England and the late Doris (Edward) Hammerman; adored grandmother of Deborah and Joel Hammerman, Mika (Lisa) and Timo Newton; dearest sister of Elsbet Spiro of Ramat Gan, Israel, Dora Shocken of Springfield, MA and Miriam Butchowitz of Givat Haim, Israel. Herta and her husband Ernest fled Nazi Germany in 1934 and were married in Florence, Italy. They immigrated to Chicago in 1938. She was a well known children’s photographer on Chicago’s south side and the southern suburbs before moving to Evanston in 1967. Herta was an avid tennis player when she was younger and remained a tennis aficionado throughout her life, she also swam regularly into her seventies. For many years she volunteered at the Field Museum where her photography was honored for its contributions. Private services have been held. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her memory to the Self Help Home for the Aged, 908 W. Argyle, Chicago, IL 60640 would be appreciated.
