The 2005 dietary guidelines say that alcohol may have beneficial effects for some people when consumed in moderation, defined as up to one drink per day for women and up to two drinks per day for men. A drink is 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 fluid ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits.
