The Cicero Public Library will gain additional parking after the Town Board approved hiring a company last week to demolish buildings at three different sites. .
The board unanimously approved a $496,300 contract for Elgin-based American Demolition Corp. for the job in addition to other work.
Two vacant buildings adjacent to the library, 5225 W. Cermak Rd., will be torn down to make way for a parking lot and possibly some green space.
Buildings will be razed in two other areas, the Cermak Bowl II on the 5200 block of West 25th Street and the old Becker Brothers factory on the 3400 block of South Laramie Avenue, said town spokesman Omar Duque.
The town bought the bowling alley in early 2004, and at the time town officials said they considered the site a prime location to build a health clinic. The old Becker Brothers site will be part of the redevelopment of the former Sportsman’s Park site, Duque said. The $600 million project comprises hotels, a convention center, retail stores and an indoor sports and entertainment complex. The library has about 20 parking spaces designated for visitors. Library Director Pat Terracino estimated the creation of a new lot would at least double the number of spaces.
