Walter A. Schaffer, age 81, passed away peacefully Friday February 11, 2005 at home in Tarpon Springs, Florida. His dear friend Carolyn Hunt was at his side. Mr. Schaffer was born September 27, 1923 in Chicago, IL. He spent his childhood and teenage years in Libertyville, IL and graduated from Libertyville Township High School in 1941. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army in the European Theater. He was injured in France by enemy fire and was awarded the Bronze Star for Heroic Achievement and the Purple Heart. Upon returning from the War he completed his education at the University of Illinois, earning a degree in chemical engineering. He married Joyce Peterson in 1946. The couple made their home in Keokuk, Iowa where Mr. Schaffer worked for the Hubinger Company for 30 years where he was vice president of manufacturing, and then spent several more years as an executive in the savings and loan industry. Upon retirement, the Schaffers then had homes in Tarpon Springs, FL and Mineral Point, WI. Mr. Schaffer was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Schaffer; his parents Clifford and Milo (Mason) Schaffer; and his brother Paul R. Schaffer. He is survived by many loving nieces and nephews and countless friends.
