The phrase “theme wedding” might inspire thoughts of creepy ceremonies in which the bridal party is dressed like hobbits. Sure, some couples go medieval, but others use themes to create unique, customized events. Here are some Frodo-free ideas.

OLD SCHOOL: Rent the cafeteria at your old high school for a back-to-school wedding. Hairnet-wearing waiters can serve on cafeteria trays. When the dining’s done, dance to your favorite tunes from back in the day. And smooch away–there are no chaperones to pry you apart.

LOVE STORY: Got a fairy-tale romance? Go for a romantic literary theme. Some area libraries rent space for special events such as wedding receptions. Print famous love quotes on guest place cards and use stacks of antique books as centerpieces. After the gala, guests can swipe one as a party favor.

TRAVEL LOG: Host a wedding of the world with a global theme. Invitations can resemble airline tickets or passports. Instead of table numbers, use country names. Serve a variety of international cuisine from sushi to sauerkraut. During dessert, cut into a cake shaped like luggage.

SEA AND BE SCENE: A reception doesn’t have to be on the lakefront to have a cool water theme. Edge invitations with sea shells and scatter colorful shells across each table. Serve seafood favorites such as crab, shrimp and lobster bisque. Skip floral centerpieces for goldfish swimming in bowls and let guests keep them as favors.

SWEET CELEBRATION: Give your guests a li’l sugar with a candy-themed celebration. Attach goodies to the invitations and use a giant candy jar as a centerpiece. Bartenders can mix drinks such as “candy bar” and “sweet candy apple.” For dessert, trade a traditional cake for a buffet table packed with your favorite sweets.
