Social Security was never meant to be an investment like stocks, bonds and real estate. It’s an investment only in the sense all other taxes are. The returns on income and sales taxes are things like sidewalks, the court system and defense. The return on Social Security is a more stable society and the reduction of poverty. It is a program that, like public schools, has worked well to mitigate the gap between the big players and everybody else.
