Now that the National Hockey League had the courage to call off the season because of runaway costs, Major League Baseball should do the same in 2005.
To halt runaway salaries for those who spend 95 percent of their time waiting for something to happen on the field, the money given to them (not earned) is a travesty.
Baseball must return to its grass roots for an identity update. It no longer relates to the world of ordinary Americans. The injection of well-publicized salaries and bonuses of players, coupled with the unbridled greed of owners, are mainly responsible for this breach.
Call off next season for this out-of-control avarice, the obvious rampant steroid use, the induced and hyped athlete idolatry by rabid fans, and the false elitism that Major League Baseball has created within its ranks.
Sadly America is far too entrenched into the sporting world to ever sanction what the National Hockey League did.
