This is regarding “Illinois, 4 others seek own coal rules; Bush’s air plan too slow, they say” (Metro, Feb. 15).
The best way to reduce pollution in Illinois and throughout the nation is to pass the Clear Skies legislation now before Congress. In addition to mandating further reductions in the most significant emissions from coal-fired power plants, Clear Skies is the first legislation to specifically regulate and reduce mercury emissions at these plants.
By using flexible, proven approaches that were successful in tackling acid rain and building on the environmental progress already made at our nation’s power plants, Clear Skies delivers cleaner air faster without driving energy price increases that would hurt consumers and the economy.
