Tim Booth

Bone

While “Bone” is being positioned as James singer Tim Booth’s solo debut, such a distinction ignores the wonderful collaboration with composer Angelo Badalamenti that Booth recorded back in 1996. The loveliest track from that album, “Fall in Love,” gets reprised here, but like the rest of the disc, it’s a little more stripped down, more bluesy and laced with acoustic guitar, with most of the melody carried by Booth’s high voice. James fans will find a lot to like in “Bone,” yet something feels missing. Some songs lack the mystery and adventure that made James’ best efforts so entrancing and feature lyrics so boneheaded they make Bono seem positively lucid.

Best track: “Down to the Sea,” originally released as a single, which features a loping drum beat, a funky bass line and an oddly subdued chorus.
