Benedict J. Spalding, 95, passed away Friday, February 18, 2005 at home in Kansas City, Missouri. He was born in Berwyn, IL in 1909, was a resident of Chicago for 58 years and a parishioner at St. Gertrude’s Parish, before moving to Kansas City in 1967. He was a graduate of Loyola University of Chicago College of Arts and Sciences and of its College of Law. He was employed by Mobil Corporation for 29 years before retiring in 1974 as Chief Counsel of its Kansas City Credit Card Center. He practiced law in Illinois and Missouri and was a member of the bar of both states. He served four years in the U.S. Navy in World War II and was a Lieutenant Commander (Ret.) in the United States Naval Reserve. He was a member of the Appraisal Institute (formerly American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers). He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Alice Dugan Spalding. He was the devoted father of two daughters, Alice (Joseph) S. Rhea of Kansas City and Mary D. Spalding of Lee’s Summit, MO and of a son, Benedict (Alison) J. Spalding, Jr. of San Francisco, CA; and was the fond grandfather of 11 grandchildren, including Elizabeth Rhea (William) Kirk of South Bend, IN (formerly of Chicago); and three great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian burial will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 22, 2005 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Kansas City, MO. Interment will be at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, February 23, 2005 in All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines, IL. In lieu of flowers, Masses are preferred.
