The Bush administration’s plans to change Social Security are unnecessary and destructive.

Those of us who are under 55, yet have been contributing to Social Security for the last 30 years, do not want to see the system undermined and benefits threatened.

If people want private accounts, they are free to have them today and to receive tax benefits to boot. I have them, yet the return I have realized, after the ups and downs of the market, leaves me less than confident that I should put more of my financial eggs in the private investment account basket.

Social Security insures against life’s misfortunes, such as the loss of a parent, disability or poverty in old age. Social Security can make the difference between hopelessness and being a part of our community.
