Clarence Page’s Feb. 23 column on Hunter S. Thompson brought to mind his appearance in the 1970s at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He arrived late; while waiting, the audience was left to contemplate a chair and table, which was topped by a bottle of Wild Turkey and a six-pack of Heineken beer. His presentation amounted to opening the audience to questions. His most memorable and now somewhat prophetic statement that night was when he was asked what his favorite vice was, he replied “excess.”
