This is regarding the letter to the editor “Illinois must update telecommunications laws” (Voice of the people, March 1), by Carrie J. Hightman, president, SBC Illinois. The letter, asking for changes in telecom laws in Illinois, rings hollow.

The local companies have already won the war over competitors’ access to their facilities. In the face of this, the local companies have still not made progress at closing the digital divide of access to broadband services.

The mindset of the local phone companies to seek relief via state regulation will lead them over the same cliff as AT&T. Innovation is the key, not shackling possible competition.

SBC has never been accused of looking out for the consumer. Why should anyone believe otherwise now?
