I have my own “quart of milk” test. I live in an inner-ring suburb and have long maintained that I could never live somewhere where I would have to get in the car at all to buy a quart of milk.
Land doesn’t cause sprawl; cars do. Or, better put, the automobile culture makes sprawl possible.
