Saul Bellow was my favorite author. Since I was raised in Englewood and went to high school in Woodlawn, his descriptions of Chicago found an echoing recognition of my own life on the South Side.
So my visit to the Chicago Historical Society recently met with surprise: The Chicago History Makers plaque there still did not include an entry for my favorite Nobel laureate. This I found curious. The recently departed president of the society assured me several years ago that he would look into this obvious omission.
Now that Mr. Bellow is gone, it might well be time for the society that keeps Chicago history to recognize his international stature and the Chicago history he lived and memorialized.
