I moved from Chicago to Hammond nine years ago and have been ridiculed for it ever since by my Chicago colleagues at work. So, I am in deep debt to Rick Kogan for the very nice (though too short) piece he did about the place (Sidewalks, March 20). I decided to move because I have an eccentric interest in old homes and was able to acquire an English Tudor mansion in Hammond for the price of a one-bedroom condo in Chicago. This is the kind of secret that New Buffalo, Mich., kept until 20 years ago or so. Still, I am glad for the vindicating publicity. Come back anytime.

Missing ingredient
As a regular reader of Leah Eskin’s column, which I love, and a native of Baltimore-in Merry Land as she so sweetly refers to it-I find it necessary to offer some constructive criticism: It is an absolute sacrilege to make a true Maryland crab cake without adding Old Bay Seasoning (Home on the Range, March 20).
If she ever wants to taste a truly representative sample of this divine food, she might visit Angelina’s on Harford Road in Baltimore or order them online to be shipped in dry ice.
I am certain that other natives of the Chesapeake Bay watershed would offer the same advice.

Bring back Dave
I’d be exaggerating if I said the loss of Dave Barry’s funny column from the Sunday Magazine is a tragedy. But it is a very big disappointment. Reprinting some of his old columns is not the answer. Please bring him back. Drag him back if you have to.
