With the public schools in the news at least once a month, it is important to let people know there are many positive experiences. As a retired teacher from a north suburb, I have now found myself substituting at Lane Tech High School in the city. I was told that I would not like the system and coming from the “elite” suburbs, I would find some shocking behaviors. This advice was absolutely off the mark. The school is massive, yet in the halls, during passing periods, I do not hear students screaming out obscenities, pushing teachers out of the way or lingering past the bell as I often did in the “elite” system.

The students are polite, focused and respectful. As many times as I have been at the school, I have never had to refer a student out of the classroom. What a pleasure! What a shot in the arm! What a sign of hope for our future!

You go Lane Tech–it is a pleasure serving you.
