If Illinois politicians want to shore up public transportation, they can do so by getting out of public transportation altogether and letting the marketplace dictate the fares.
In addition, the CTA fare is–for the most part–the same whether one rides the elevated train or the bus for just one stop or 10. Maybe it is time to tier CTA fares to riders’ destinations.
Why not find new funds by making the current system more efficient rather than by tapping taxpayers?
The latter, after all, only throws money at problems.
