Barrington kept its standing as the class of the Mid-Suburban League with a 9-5 victory over visiting Prospect on Friday.

The win over the MSL East co-leaders helped the home team maintain a one-game lead in the West while registering its third straight 20-victory season.

Barrington (20-6, 9-2) fired on all cylinders. The offense collected 10 hits for a 7-1 lead after four innings, while pitcher Billy Chapman controlled the tempo on the mound.

“I kept the ball outside and inside–mostly inside,” said the junior, who improved to 5-0 with the complete-game performance. “I let the defense take care of it. They did a great job of it.”

The Broncos’ gloves contributed an error-free game that included two double plays.

“That’s one thing we’re trying to work on every day,” said Barrington coach Jim Hawrysko, the former Northeastern Illinois head coach. “They hit some hard balls, and we did a great job defensively.”

Shortstop Dain Hall delivered the back-breaker by disobeying hitting coach Ray Piagentini’s fourth-inning instructions of taking the first pitch. All was quickly forgiven when the sophomore drilled the first pitch over the fence in right-center for a three-run homer.

“He told me I was going to get a first-pitch curveball, but I didn’t want that one. I wanted the next pitch, the fastball,” said the sophomore, who hit his fifth homer of the season. “I got it in my head that I wanted the curve. I read it all the way.”

Matt Davis stretched his homer streak to five games with a two-out, seventh-inning grand slam–his eighth homer of the season–for Prospect (17-7, 6-5).

“I knew if he gave me a pitch to hit I had to do something with it,” ” said the Eastern Kentucky-bound infielder who increased the school career record to 17.
