Beginning this month, the city and suburbs welcome back their farmers markets, staffed by growers from throughout Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin. Shoppers again can find fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables in the weekly markets that will be open throughout the summer and autumn. Many markets also will offer coffee, cheeses, meats, fish, potted herbs, bakery items, flowers, art, crafts and even musical entertainment.

In the city, the Daley Center market will continue to be open weekly for downtown workers to enjoy. Other markets throughout the city will feature more diversity this year.

“We’re focusing on bringing in more urban growers,” said Yescenia Mota, farmers market coordinator for the City of Chicago. These growers, many of whom started as hobby gardeners, are converting lots and rooftops across the city into gardens for produce to sell at area markets, Mota said.

Also this year, Chicago’s Green City Market, which sells organic and sustainable produce, is expanding. The market, which has been held Wednesdays in Lincoln Park, now also will be open on Saturdays.
