There’s no shortage of music venues in Chicago, but at least one of them is unique: the terrace at the Museum of Contemporary Art.
Each summer, this glorious outdoor space opens up for live improvised music, with noteworthy jazz, avant-garde and eclectic performers playing in front of a stunning backdrop, the city’s skyline.
This year’s Tuesdays on the Terrace series will open at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday with Chicago tenor saxophonist Fred Anderson, a musician revered around the world. The sheer heft and majesty of Anderson’s work have influenced generations of tenor players, but the prospect of catching him on the terrace–with the downtown bustle all around him–represents an opportunity too rich to miss.
Anderson will return for future installments of Tuesdays on the Terrace (Aug. 23 and Sept. 13), and he’s just one attraction in a lineup of intriguing artists. The schedule will continue with Crosswind (June 14 and Sept. 27), Fred Lonberg-Holm’s Valentine Trio (June 21, July 19 and Aug. 16), Dave Rempis Trio (June 28, July 26 and Aug. 30); Corey Wilkes Trio (July 5 and Aug. 9), Keefe Jackson Trio (July 12 and Aug. 2), Jeff Parker Trio (Sept. 6), and Nat Lepine Trio (Sept. 20).
Shows run from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Free; 312-280-2660 or visit www.mcachicago.org.
