The testimony of U.S. District Judge Joan Lefkow before the U.S. Senate to advocate for increased security for judges was brave and compelling (“Protect our judges, Lefkow implores,” Page 1, May 19). Providing a security detail, or increasing it, makes sense, when called for, and is tragically overdue.

The taxpayers should not pay, however, for home security systems for judges–or anyone else. They should pay for this themselves and should be able to afford it.

If the taxpayers have to pay for home security systems for the judicial branch, why not the executive and legislative branches? What about local police officers?
