In his recent column criticizing embryonic stem-cell research (“Raising the stakes; You don’t have to be a believer to think there is something wrong with destroying human life, however immature,” Commentary, May 26), Steve Chapman selectively quotes from a recent opinion piece I wrote for The Washington Post and effectively distorts my point. In this commentary, I indicated that good science requires patience, and emphasized the danger of promising too much too soon.
Human embryonic stem cells were identified less than a decade ago, and we are only beginning to appreciate their potential.
The fact that the research is often slow and difficult should not distract us from its exceptional promise.
