Singer and actress Mandy Moore designs T-shirts under the label Mblem, but she doesn’t call herself a fashion designer.
At Monday night’s Council of Fashion Designers of America Fashion Awards in New York, Moore said the likes of Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren and Vera Wang–who was named the year’s top womenswear designer–operate “at a completely different level.”
“I’m just here as a fan of fashion. I don’t have it in me to do this,” she said.
Sarah Michelle Gellar, Nicole Richie and Claire Danes were among other dressed-up celebs in attendance. Designer John Varvatos won for menswear and Marc Jacobs for accessory design. Model Kate Moss was honored for her fashion influence (making Ugg boots popular, for example).
Lucky break
Ab-perfect actor and Ralph Lauren Polo model Tyson Beckford was injured after his truck crashed into a utility pole in New Jersey and burst into flames.
He lost control of his 2004 red Dodge Ram shortly before 5 a.m. Monday and skidded into the pole, police Detective Thomas O’Keeffe said. The truck caught fire, and Beckford was able to pull himself out before flames engulfed it, police said.
Beckford, named one of People magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People in 1995, was taken to the Jersey City Medical Center, where he was treated for head trauma and cuts, O’Keeffe said. A hospital spokesman said Beckford was treated Monday afternoon and released.
His manager, Bethann Hardison, told the New York Daily News the injuries weren’t serious.
SHOWING LOVE: P. Diddy’s mom was no “Monster-In-Law” to Jennifer Lopez, she tells the New York Post.
Janice Combs blasted an InStyle magazine report that implied she didn’t want her hip-hop mogul son talking to Lopez.
Though Diddy and J.Lo never tied the knot, Janice Combs insists she enjoyed Lopez’s company and that the report “is not true.”
“I never would have said that,” she said. “I loved Jennifer a lot. I have nothing wrong to say about her. She is a decent, focused young lady.”
HOLDING COURT: Young Buck will have to stand trial to face the accusation that he stabbed a man during the scuffle at last year’s Vibe Awards, a California judge ruled.
The G-Unit rapper allegedly stabbed Jimmy James Johnson after Johnson punched his mentor, Dr. Dre, during the Nov. 15 taping of the show. (Johnson, meanwhile, has pleaded not guilty to an assault charge.)
“We’re confident when all the truth comes out, he’ll be exonerated,” said Buck’s attorney, Leonard Levine.
FATHER’S DAY: Will Smith and Nicolas Cage are ready to grumble.
The pair of high-earning action stars are set to share the screen in the comedy “Time Share,” Variety reports.
They’ll play a pair of dads who find out their vacation is ruined because their families are booked in the same time-share.
Hilarity, as they say, ensues.
