I wholeheartedly agree with those who defend the rights of women to nurse their babies in public (News, June 7). But as the mother of a child who suffered second- and third-degree burns from a spilled cup of tea, I take exception to the slogan, “What’s more natural than coffee and milk?” No woman, in public or in private, should nurse her baby while drinking a hot beverage. Neither should a man drink hot coffee while holding his child on his knee.

Should a woman be allowed to go in a Starbucks, drink a decaf latte while her child sleeps in his safety seat and then nurse him at the table? Absolutely.

But please don’t let the zeal for this worthy cause get in the way of basic infant safety.
