Though I feel nothing but compassion for the family of Natalee Holloway, the 18-year-old girl who has vanished in Aruba, one wonders if she had been a different type of girl would the world media have covered her disappearance so ardently.
What if instead of being an attractive, intelligent, middle-class, honors student, white girl who disappeared on the exotic island of Aruba, she was an unattractive, below-average student, black girl who vanished in the ghetto?
The media are heavily biased in favor of looks and image.
If a person, particularly a girl, is cute and smart, she’ll get a lot of coverage, including international coverage.
If not she may be buried in the back pages of the local paper if she is lucky to get any coverage at all.
