Athletics closer Huston Street slightly strained his left hamstring during pregame drills on Saturday and likely will miss several days.

“It wasn’t what I hoped to hear,” A’s manager Ken Macha said Sunday. “In all likelihood he won’t be available for the next several days.”

Street (2-1, 1.59 ERA), who became the closer when Octavio Dotel went on the disabled list with a strained right elbow May 19, said he was jogging in the outfield and felt his hamstring lock up.

“I took a bad step while I was going through my everyday routine,” he said. “It just felt unstable. We’ll give it some rest so it won’t get any worse.”

Setback for Sweeney

Royals first baseman Mike Sweeney, who has missed the past four games with a sprained left wrist and elbow sustained in Wednesday’s game, had a setback while taking practice swings and hitting off a tee.

“It didn’t feel as good as I thought it would or hoped it would,” Sweeney said. “We’ll see how it feels [Monday]. It wasn’t really encouraging.”

Sweeney said he received a cortisone shot Sunday.

“Hopefully it will help out,” he said. “Between the medicine and the treatment I’ve been getting from the trainers, hopefully I’ll feel a lot better [Monday].”

Extra innings

John Drennen, a 19-year-old outfielder who was the 33rd overall pick in the draft, signed with the Indians for $1million three days before he graduates Rancho Bernardo High School in San Diego. . . . Mariners third baseman Adrian Beltre was back in the lineup after missing the previous five games with a left hamstring injury and had two hits against the Mets.
