Sen. Dick Durbin’s “apology” for his Guantanamo Bay comments was anything but. A sure sign of a phony apology is the “I’m sorry if . . . ” preface, which Durbin used several times in his Senate speech Tuesday. This places the blame on the listener for having taken offense instead of on the speaker for having given offense. A real apology starts with “I’m sorry because,” not “I’m sorry if.”

As far as I’m concerned, Durbin is still unrepentant.
