Kanye West was the big winner at Tuesday night’s BET Awards. If only he were there to celebrate.
The Chicago MC won for best male hip-hop artist and best video (“Jesus Walks”) but, like seven other honorees, didn’t show.
Even so, he had a good night. Even his smooth-voiced protege John Legend came away a winner, picking up best new artist honors, the same award West won last year.
Performances made Tuesday’s show memorable, beginning with a surprise reunion set from The Fugees. “If you want another Fugee album, let me see your hands in the air right now,” Wyclef Jean said.
Ironic-award-of-the-night honors went to the soon-to-be-solo women of Destiny’s Child, who won for best group just a few weeks after announcing they are breaking up after finishing their tour.
