The bands at Saturday’s Live 8 concerts reportedly played for free, but they were paid in a way–with a boost in record sales.
Pink Floyd, which reunited for the London show, saw its “Echoes” album post a 1,343 percent increase in sales in the UK on Sunday compared with the same day a week ago, according to British record retailer HMV. Coldplay, Annie Lennox and Dido also saw significant sales increases.
Pete Doherty was the only Live 8 performer to see sales drop. British media singled out his set as one of the worst.
Two performances–of Beatles’ classics “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” (sung by Paul McCartney and U2) and concert finale “Hey Jude”–are already available online.
