Summer entertaining can be breezy, if you take the gathering outdoors. Here are some tips:

– Invite guests three weeks in advance. For a large gathering, estimate that 70 percent to 80 percent of the invitees will show.

– Estimate three alcoholic drinks and four to five appetizers per guest.

– For an inexpensive centerpiece, wrap a shoebox in white paper and fill it with fruit or seasonal flowers held in place by green foam. For a party that’s a bit more formal, use different-shaped mirrors on the table with simple glass votive candleholders placed on top.

– Use martini glasses to serve chilled soups or appetizers.

– Don’t be afraid to bring glassware outside. It’s more stylish than plastic cups.
