We have recently witnessed one of the most vivid examples of herd journalism. A minor human interest story about Northwestern women students wearing flip-flops to a White House ceremony–initiated, I believe, by a Tribune photo–spinning out of control into a “me too” media feeding frenzy. Within days the story was all over newspapers, magazines, radio and TV, with news analysts and columnists weighing in on the propriety of girls wearing inappropriate footwear to meet the president.

Cute story, but what ever happened to news judgment?
