The Subway sandwich shop at 100 W. 87th St. reopened Tuesday, a day after it was closed by city inspectors who found hundreds of cockroaches, dead and alive, in the ice machine and the food preparation area, as well as on the walls, floor and dishes.
The shop was issued tickets for inadequate pest control and for having no certified manager on site.
“When you serve food to the public you owe it to your customers to keep your establishment safe and clean, and management failed to do this,” said Michael J. Picardi, the acting commissioner of the Department of Streets and Sanitation.
It was allowed to reopen after a thorough cleaning and it passed a “top to bottom inspection,” said Matt Smith, a spokesman for the department.
