An effort is afoot to import ICE from Britain.
That’s ICE, as in, in case of emergency. The British constabulary asks its citizens to list an emergency contact in their cell phones under the heading ICE so police or paramedics know who to call.
Conceived in April, the idea got legs with the London subway bombings this month. Several U.S. police forces are working to adopt it here.
By labeling a number “ICE – brother,” for example, the police don’t waste time scrolling through cell phone listings and guessing who to call.
