I’m obese and 48, and I am the one who is responsible for my weight, not the Oreo cookie! I am sick and tired of people trying to foist their personal responsibility onto someone else. We all make choices; some choices are better than others. If I choose to pop an Oreo (or any other sweet) into my mouth, it is just that, my choice.
I agree that there are foods that make you feel really good. Unfortunately obesity is rampant in this country and among our children it is a time bomb. No one will argue with the statistics. But I have a problem in pointing a finger at a cookie (or McDonald’s for that matter) and saying that is the reason for this epidemic.
I think the articles have given a crutch to any overweight person. He or she can now blame the food companies, just like smokers can blame tobacco companies. They can point a finger at the food companies and say they put out a product that affects the brain in the same manner as heroin and is just as addictive.
I believe there are any number of foods that likely have the same effect on brain patterns as the Oreo. Mashed potatoes, warm bread and brownies all come to mind.
The articles seem to make a case that Kraft has kept the Oreo on the supermarket shelves because it knows it is addictive. I think this is ludicrous and any jury members who would believe this kind of nonsense need to have their realities checked. Kraft, however, has deep pockets and if someone is going to be sued, why not it.
Yes I know how good I feel after eating chocolate, but I try to limit the amount of the stuff that I eat. As a parent, I had snacks available for my kids, but they didn’t get them anytime they wanted them. Parents need to watch what their kids eat.
