Despite providing fewer parking spaces than allowed by city ordinance, plans to expand a Mexican grocery store in Crystal Lake’s downtown have been approved by city officials.
La Rosita — a grocery store, bakery and butcher shop at 131 N. Main St. that also serves Mexican food — wants to open a sit-down restaurant next door.
Owner Sergio Perez is buying a parking lot with 17 spaces, 36 fewer than required for a business of that size, city officials say.
But the City Council unanimously approved Perez’s request, with several members saying that many of La Rosita’s customers walk to the store.
