The skinny on Detroit
LAKE ORION, Mich–Thanks, Alan [Solomon], for the upbeat and positive article about travel in Detroit [“Detroit/Dearborn: A no-joke weekend of very cool things”; Aug. 21]. Either you wrote your article after staying here for a month or you used to live in the area. I am 62 years old, have lived here all my life and have never seen an article so positive and so encompassing about Detroit and its nightlife, restaurants and attractions.
–Bill Kalmar
Alan Solomon responds: “Didn’t stay a month and have never lived there, but I could. Did I really say that?”
Fair to Detroit
AMARILLO, Texas–Alan Solomon’s travel piece is one of the best travel stories I’ve ever read. Not just anyone can take a complicated subject like Detroit and make it appealing to a wide audience. The best thing: It was fair, and Detroit needs a break now and then.
I’m a card-carrying member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, a group that had the foresight this year to place downtown Detroit on its 11-most endangered list. If Detroit can make it back, there’s hope for all cities.
