Mel “Melville” L. Turner, 82, of Kelly Lake, WI, formerly of South Shore, passed away Thursday, Sept. 29 at home. Mel married Phyllis Goldberg in 1944 and they celebrated their 60th anniversary. He was active in scouting since 1933, in 1970 he received scouting’s distinguished Silver Beaver Award and in 1971 was awarded Vigil Honor of the Order of the Arrow. Mel served as a pilot in WWII flying B17’s and PBY’s and remained active in the Air Force Reserve for 20 years retiring as a Major. He was a partner with his father in the Mel Turner and Son Auto Repair until 1972. Mel joined ASIA (Automotive Service Industry Association) until he retired in 1987. That same year, he and Phyllis moved to Kelly Lake, WI, where they had spent their summers. Mel was a volunteer for Community Memorial Hospital for 18 years in Oconto Falls, WI, was also a member of the Military Officers Association of America and the 4th Emergency Rescue Squad. Mel leaves behind his beloved wife, Phyllis; his son, Don (Carol); his daughter, Diane Wells (Bob Kaminski); his granddaughter, Melissa; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter, Kristine. Friends may call at Jones Funeral Service (or visit jonesfuneral.com) in Oconto Falls from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2 and Monday from 8 a.m. to time of Service at 10 a.m. Cremation will follow with a burial at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Community Memorial Hospital MRI Fund in Oconto Falls and to the Oconto Humane Society.
