Just 22 seconds into a Catholic Blue matinee between Loyola and Mt. Carmel on Saturday, the following events had transpired: Loyola’s returner slipped on the opening kickoff, its quarterback threw an interception on the first snap and Mt. Carmel’s Larry Dortch scored from 40 yards out on the next play.

After that burst of excitement, those in attendance were in for a letdown about 2,858 seconds long.

Mt. Carmel walked away with a 21-3 victory and a still-unblemished record, thanks to two long Dominic Sulo touchdown runs in the second half. But the game was otherwise a battle of a Caravan (6-0, 3-0) struggling for offensive consistency and a Ramblers unit (3-3, 1-2) failing to take full advantage of opportunities.

Mt. Carmel’s offense was all-or-nothing all afternoon: The three Caravan scoring drives involved a total of five plays. Along with Dortch’s one-snap score, Sulo busted out for touchdowns of 73 and 40 yards.

“We need a little more consistency,” Sulo said following his 151-yard day. “We weren’t really executing in the first half. We knew we could get it done. We just weren’t.”
