I feel compelled to respond to your “The Ring That Got Away” piece [Sept. 18].

You see, I am that “senior boy” referred to in the article and I am insulted! The truth of the matter is, yes, I did lose the ring playing touch football and I did desperately try to find it–end of story. For that I am sorry. Does that make me a jerk? I think you would be hard pressed to find anybody who hasn’t lost a piece of jewelry.

At the time it happened, I don’t remember it being a major issue. The subsequent closing of the school obviously increased the sentimental value, or the story somehow took on a life of its own. Yes, I, too, am sorry she gave me the ring. It would have saved me from having to defend myself for an innocent mistake that happened 30 years ago.
