Bremen’s dreams of a perfect season came to an abrupt halt Friday night when Oak Forest defeated the Braves 27-21 in Midlothian.
Todd McCain led the Bengals with 131 yards and four touchdowns on 21 carries. His final score with 9 minutes 22 seconds remaining in the game gave Oak Forest (5-2) a 27-14 lead. Bremen (6-1) cut the deficit on its following possession when Amir Ross (10-for-20, 217 yards, three touchdowns) connected with Hinton Huckabee for a 60-yard TD pass.
Oak Forest made a game-saving stop in its own territory late in the game when Bremen running back Tim Cazley was tackled for a loss on a fourth-and-1 play with 1:08 remaining. Defenders John Morrissy, Tom Nowicki, Ryan Ramos and Matt Kucharski were involved in the play.
“This is the biggest game of the year,” McCain said. “Nothing is bigger than the Oak Forest-Bremen game. They definitely overlooked us.”
The turning point came in the third quarter when Jesse Omelas intercepted a Ross pass and returned it 15 yards to the Bremen 13.
The turnover set up McCain’s third touchdown and gave Oak Forest a 21-14 advantage.
