In the 1960s, President Lyndon B. Johnson had the right idea in attempting to wage a war on poverty. His big mistake was thinking we could fight a war in Vietnam at the same time.

Citizens’ confidence in George W. Bush’s presidency is waning. Bush mistakenly took America to war in Iraq and led the move to cut taxes for the rich and, now, hurricanes are forcing government to do something about growing poverty in our country.

Conservative Republican philosophy sees the main role of the federal government as providing for the defense of the country. As a result, there is no limit on how much money conservatives would spend on the military while millions live in poverty and the nation’s infrastructure deteriorates.

Government that doesn’t address the increasingly wide gap between haves and have-nots is morally and spiritually inept.
