Sport heroes and role models have been a topic discussed widely in the sports pages across the country. On Sunday there will be many sports heroes running this year’s LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon–40,000 to be precise.
It doesn’t matter what age your child is; all children can all relate to running, whether they participated in the local tiny tot trot, the mandatory mile in middle school gym class or the high school cross country team.
It’s a great opportunity to support the sport of road racing and a chance to witness some of the fastest runners in the world.
And guess what, here’s an incentive–it’s free!
Not only can you and your family watch the race at different parts along the city due to a great course and with the help of our mass transportation system to get from Point A to Point B, but it’s truly an international event with runners from Anguilla to Zimbabwe.
There are short runners, tall runners, chubby runners and plenty of skinny runners. There are many who are raising money for great causes, and you’ll see inspirational wheelchair racers too.
Watching a marathon is a great teaching opportunity for kids. Have them figure out the mile pace of the top athletes, measure out 26.2 miles from your house in each direction to give them perspective and you can have them look on the map to see where some of these top runners are from.
