Public transportation has a golden opportunity to increase ridership, but it has proposed the wrong route. With the cost of gasoline near $3 a gallon and probably going higher, and with our expressways clogged with traffic, now is the time to put on a full-court press to entice drivers to leave the car at home and take public transportation.

As fares increase, ridership goes down. Having two riders at $1.50 each is better than one rider at $2. So reduce fares, make parking at public transportation stations ample and less expensive, and advertise the advantages of getting there on time.

But a fare raise? Not the way to go.
