Chief Executive magazine has come up with a list of cars considered appropriate for a CEO to drive.

The $180,000 Ferrari F430 Spider was a selection for the weekend toy.

“We debated the choice,” said Bill Holstein, editor of Chief Executive.

But money wasn’t the issue.

“You have to take a high-performance car like that and spending the better part of a Saturday at the track to enjoy it, and we didn’t think most CEOs would want to spend their time doing that.

“But CEOs in entertainment or sports or those in privately held companies not subject to the same pressures as publicly held companies would enjoy one,” he said.

Holstein said the Ferrari should be reserved for weekends, not the daily commute. If the CEO pulls into the executive lot in his F430 Spider, chances are the directors are going to call him aside before the employees–or board members–key the doors.

And workers should avoid pulling a Ferrari into the employee lot.

“It sends a negative signal to everyone in the building that Joe Schmo must have a sweetheart deal to make so much money to lead the good life,” Holstein said.
