Hurricane Gilbert: The strongest Atlantic hurricane on record. On Sept. 16, 1988, Gilbert’s sustained winds roared at 185 m.p.h. and might briefly have approached 200 m.p.h.; its central air pressure dipped to 26.13″ (in the Atlantic Basin, only 2005’s Wilma with 26.05″ is lower).
