A Chicago cop was charged Thursday with reckless homicide in the September hit-and-run death of a Chicago teenager.

Charlton McKay, 32, a nine-year Chicago police veteran, also was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident and filing a false police report, said Cook County state’s attorney spokesman Tom Stanton.

Cook County Judge Kevin Sheehan set bond Thursday at $300,000 for McKay, who worked in the narcotics division of the 5th police district.

The police department filed paperwork Thursday to place McKay in a “no-pay” status, police spokesman Pat Camden said. He was stripped of his police powers last month after becoming the focus of the investigation into the death of 15-year-old Edward Lucas.

Lucas, captain of Morgan Park High School’s sophomore basketball team, was walking home just before

8:30 p.m. Sept. 22 when a car drove though a stop sign and hit him, Camden said. He died at the hospital.

McKay had reported his car stolen, but it was later recovered with damage to the body, Camden said. Sheehan scheduled a preliminary hearing in the case for Nov. 10.
