I recently moved here from Silver Spring, Md., and was surprised upon entering a restaurant to be asked, “Smoking or non-smoking?” Restaurants in Silver Spring have been smoke-free for years, with no loss of patronage. In fact the ban may have had the salutary effect of helping smokers to quit.
