Series batting records

3: Times a player has hit three home runs in a game–Babe Ruth did it twice for the Yankees (Oct. 6, 1926, and Oct. 9, 1928) and Reggie Jackson did once for the Yankees (Oct. 18, 1977). Players hitting two homers in a game has happened 39 times.

13: Players who homered to end a Series game, the last one coming in 2003 when Alex Gonzalez did it for Florida in Game 4 against New York.

17: Players have hit a grand slam in the Series. The last time it happened was in 1998, when Tino Martinez did it for the Yankees.

18: Career World Series home runs by Mickey Mantle, the record by three over Babe Ruth. Yogi Berra is third with 12 followed by Duke Snider’s 11 and 10 each by Lou Gehrig and Reggie Jackson.

24: Players have hit a home run in their first World Series at-bat, the last one being Andruw Jones for Atlanta in 1996. Jones hit home runs in his first two ABs.

40: Mantle’s career runs batted in, one more than Berra. Next in line: Gehrig (35), Ruth (33), DiMaggio (30) and Bill Skowron (29).

71: Berra’s all-time Series hit record, followed by Mantle (59), Frankie Frisch (58), Joe DiMaggio (54), Hank Bauer (46) and Pee Wee Reese (45).

.750: Record for Series batting average by Cincinnati’s Billy Hatcher in 1990 (9-for-12). The career Series average mark is .418 by Pepper Martin for St. Louis and Paul Molitor for Milwaukee-Toronto (both went 23-for-55).

Series pitching records

5: One-hit games pitched in the Series, the last being by Atlanta’s Tom Glavine and Mark Wohlers against Cleveland in 1995. Ed Reulbach of the Cubs did it against the Sox in 1906 and Claude Passeau did it for the Cubs against Detroit in 1945.

8: Complete games by Bob Gibson of St. Louis, most in Series history. He also holds the mark by winning seven straight games. Christy Mathewson holds the Series record of four shutouts.

10: The record for most Series wins is held by the Yankees’ Whitey Ford. He’s followed by St. Louis’ Bob Gibson and fellow Yankees Allie Reynolds and Red Ruffing, each with 7. Ford also holds records for most games started (22), most strikeouts (94), most walks (34), most innings pitched (146) and most losses (8).

16: The most Series relief appearances is held by Rollie Fingers. Mariano Rivera holds the save mark with seven.

17: Gibson’s strikeout record in a single game, done in 1968 against the Detroit Tigers. It broke the mark of 15 by Sandy Koufax, who did it in 1963 against the Yankees. Ed Walsh of the Sox is sixth with his 12-strikeout game against the Cubs in 1906.

0.36: The Series ERA by career leader Jack Billingham of Cincinnati, who allowed one earned run in 25 1/3 innings. Four others with career ERAs under 1.00: Harry Brecheen of St. Louis (0.83), Babe Ruth of Boston (0.87), Sherry Smith of Brooklyn (0.89) and Koufax (0.95).
